No Holds Barred: Bigfoot Silva, MMA in New York
Denver, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Strikeforce heavyweight fighter Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, who will be facing Fedor Emelianenko on Saturday, February 12, at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the opening round of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament. We spoke with him on January 10 when he was in New York as part of a photo and video shoot for Strikeforce and Showtime, which will be telecasting this tournament in the U.S.

We also review some of the history about the situation in New York when mixed martial arts was first legalized and then made illegal in 1997, and show why its banning was not done to ensure fighter safety.

There will be a rally on Tuesday, February 8, in New York City to support legalizing and regulating mixed martial arts in New York. More information can be found on the site of the sponsor of the rally, the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York, at

No Holds Barred: Donovan Craig on Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament
Denver, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Donovan Craig, the editor-in-chief of Fight! Magazine (

Our main discussion focused upon the upcoming Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, which begins February 12 at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime.

We began our discussion by reviewing the previous records of the fighters in this tournament against each other. Seven of the eight have previously faced other fighters in it, with each having already faced more than one of the tournament fighters. Every one of these seven fighters has at least one win and at least one loss against the tournament fighters they have already fought.

Besides discussing the brackets, the historical importance of this tournament, and how we see it going, we delved into numerous other topics. Among those we talked about were the cultural and political reasons why MMA is still not legal in New York, the role of movies and fiction in combat sports, the significance of and lessons from the Ali-Frazier trilogy and rivalry for MMA, the Jacob Volkmann-Obama situation, the omission of MMA by a recent Harris Poll on their survey about favorite sports, the actual position of M-1 Global on drug-testing and this tournament, and much more.

In addition, an online petition has just been started for Strikeforce to get the legendary Lenne Hardt as a ring announcer for this tournament. You can sign it here:

No Holds Barred: Josh Barnett
Denver, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts heavyweight fighter Josh Barnett.

He will be competing in the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament in a quarterfinal fight against Brett Rogers at a date and location to be announced.

Barnett is the most controversial fighter in this tournament, since he currently is not licensed to fight in North America. He tested positive for an anabolic steroid prior to a planned August 2009 fight with Fedor Emelianenko, and was thus denied a license by the California State Athletic Commission. This was his second official positive drug test, plus one test run of drug-testing in 2001. (Barnett denies ever taking steroids.) He next fought in Japan and Australia in 2010, where the requirements and standards for allowing fighters to compete are lower than in North America. But he is still regarded as one of the top heavyweights in the world.

He also has been playing cat-and-mouse with the California commission at several hearings which were supposed to have addressed his status. His case is still unresolved following the failure of both him and his legal representation to show up at these hearings at the same time.

Yet there are indications that other commissions may indeed grant him a license if he tests clean in whatever drug-testing they or Strikeforce may conduct. He would then be legally entitled to fight in those jurisdictions.

While Barnett may be able to take advantage of the weak drug-testing by these athletic commissions and lack of any central authority in the combat sport to conduct such drug-testing, his playing the system once again highlights the need for the adoption of the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency in the combat sports and by all these athletic commissions. But it also would be wrong to focus mainly on the shortcomings of this one fighter, since it is the very flawed system which is in place which has allowed this situation to exist.

In light of all this, we spoke with Josh Barnett on January 10 when he was in New York for a Showtime and Strikeforce photo and promo shoot. We did ask him about his license situation, but mainly focused on his upcoming fight and related issues. We discussed the importance of this tournament, his fight with Brett Rogers, the issues of the role of grappling and striking in mixed martial arts, and his coaching of fighter Megumi Fujii and her recent loss to Zoila Frausto. We also focused on the role of catch wrestling, its future as a sport and discipline, why a wrestling base is so important for competing in mixed martial arts, why catch wrestling is so important as well, and more.

No Holds Barred: Pat Miletich
Denver, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts legend Pat Miletich.

The first fighter to hold the UFC 170-pound title and the creator of one of the most influential schools of fighting, Pat Miletich, though not officially retired as a fighter, can now be seen as an announcer for Strikeforce on their telecasts on Showtime.

We spoke with him by phone on Tuesday night about a number of hot topics in mixed martial arts. We discussed the importance of the upcoming Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, the ongoing battle to legalize mixed martial arts in New York, some of the highlights of his legendary fighting career, and the influence of his style on all of mixed martial arts, where he emphasized fighters developing a well-rounded set of techniques. He elaborated on the comments he had made on the January 7 Strikeforce Challengers telecast, including his praise of the athletic abilities of rising star Tyron Woodley. We also discussed announcing and his good relationship with his fellow Strikeforce announcers, the negativity that pervades much of what calls itself the mixed martial arts media, a little bit about wrestling (especially since Pat is from Iowa), and much more.

No Holds Barred: Scott Coker on the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament
Denver, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker about the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament.

We spoke in New York on Monday about this historic tournament, which includes many of the top mixed martial arts heavyweights in the world. We discussed the structure of the tournament, the negotiations between Strikeforce and M-1 Global to re-sign Fedor Emelianenko and have him fight in this tournament, why getting Fedor was "well worth the wait," the licensing situation involving Josh Barnett who is also in this tournament, and more.

In addition, we discussed the efforts to re-legalize mixed martial arts in New York, and the February 8 rally called by the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York ( "We'll definitely have a voice there," said Scott Coker.

We also read a comment from Nick Lembo of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board about the issue of the length of rounds in this tournament. Many people would like all fights in it, regardless of whether they are for the Strikeforce heavyweight title or not, to be scheduled for five rounds. The tournament starts on February 12 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime.

Denver/Broomfield, Colorado

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with freestyle and college champion wrestler, and the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, "King" Mo Lawal (

We open by finding out when King Mo plans to return to action in Strikeforce following surgery. He attended the K-1 World Grand Prix in Japan on December 11, and we discussed that historic event, which was won by Alistair Overeem. King Mo will also be attending the Sengoku Soul of Fight card on December 30, 2010, at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo, Japan, and the Dynamite!! 2010 card on December 31, 2010, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, both of which will feature numerous fights under differing rules. We thus previewed these highly-anticipated cards.

In addition, we announced some of our top choices for the best athletes and events of 2010 in mixed martial arts, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and overall for the combat sports. We discussed why we expect 2011 to be a banner year in the combat sports for organizations like Strikeforce, Bellator, Martial Combat, and even for the K-1 World Grand Prix, as well as many others around the world. King Mo also explained why he believes that the mentality of K-1 fighters is different and preferable to that of many mixed martial arts fighters, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Stephen Koepfer on Advancing Sambo and Legalizing MMA in New York

Denver/Broomfield, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Stephen Koepfer, the president of the American Sambo Association ( and the head coach at New York Combat Sambo (

In an interview conducted at the New York Combat Sambo school in midtown Manhattan on Thursday, we discussed the history and development of the different types of sambo, including sport sambo and combat sambo. Since sambo was originally developed in the former Soviet Union during the early twentieth century, Russia and Eastern Europe remain the current strongholds of sambo. We discussed what techniques and types of submissions are allowed in both sport and combat sambo, why sambo is very useful for mixed martial arts, the history of the major international organizations which have governed sambo, and more.

We also discussed the newly-formed Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York ( This is a non-partisan volunteer group of organizations, gyms, business owners, and individuals who support the legalization and regulation of mixed martial arts in the state of New York.

The Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York will be holding a rally on Tuesday, February 8, 2011, at 12 noon, in support of legalized and regulated mixed martial arts in New York State, at 250 Broadway, Manhattan, New York, 10007 (across the street from City Hall). We discussed this rally and why all those in the combat sports should support it.

No Holds Barred: Mike Thomas, Mixed Martial Arts Pioneer
Denver, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Mike Thomas, the founder of First Nations Tae Kwon Do Mixed Martial Arts in the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada, and the former president of the International Fighting Championships (IFC).

Mike Thomas is a pioneer in mixed martial arts. He played the lead role in getting the province of Quebec to sanction the sport and adopt a set of rules to govern it in 1998. The Quebec rules were later basically adopted by California and New Jersey in 2000, which opened the door for the adoption of the unified rules of mixed martial arts in 2001, which were also based on all those rules.

Mike Thomas was also the on-site promoter for Battlecade Extreme Fighting 2, held April 26, 1996, in Kahnawake. The day after that event, eight participants were arrested in Montreal for supposedly participating in an "illegal prizefight," charges which were later thrown out.

It was our privilege and pleasure to speak by phone with Mike Thomas on Monday afternoon. We reviewed his own path which led him to the world of martial arts, which included some detours, and how martial arts allowed him to overcome many problems in life. We discussed at length the events leading up to the Battlecade Extreme Fighting 2 event, the relations between the Mohawk community and the governments of Quebec and Canada, the arrests after Battlecade Extreme Fighting 2, the vindication of those charged, and the eventual agreements which led to the adoption of the Quebec rules and the legalization and sanctioning of the sport in Quebec.

We discussed the importance of the combat sports to the culture and spirit of the people in Kahnawake, and why these sports remain so important today. We explained the pioneering role in mixed martial arts played by organizations including IFC and Extreme Fighting, and key individuals including John Perretti, Larry Hazzard, Paul Smith, and others. We thus clarified much of the early history and nature of mixed martial arts, about which so much misinformation and confusion has been spread.

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Chael Sonnen-Testosterone-California Commission Controversy, CTE, and More
Denver, cO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again discusses a number of critical health and safety issues for fighters in mixed martial arts and boxing with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.

We begin by untangling what should have been a straightforward issue involving the suspension by the California State Athletic Commission of UFC fighter Chael Sonnen. The commission had originally suspended Sonnen for one year and fined him $2500 after finding that he had a very elevated level of testosterone in a postfight drug test following his August 7, 2010, loss to Anderson Silva. Sonnen claimed that he was being injected with testosterone as part of testosterone replacement therapy under the care of a doctor, but the commission noted that he had not received clearance from the commission to fight while taking these injections, much less that very elevated level of testosterone. Sonnen was found to have had a T/E ratio (testosterone to epitestosterone ratio) of 16.9-to-1, where the maximum allowed by the California commission and many others is only 4-to-1.

Yet at the California commission hearing on December 2, 2010, the suspension of Sonnen was cut in half to six months, meaning that he could fight again as soon as March 2011, about the same time he likely would have fought next had there been no suspension.

Dr. Goodman offers her view on how the California commission handled this entire situation. She noted that the commission never called as a witness any endocrinologist to evaluate the claims by Sonnen that he suffered from hypogonadism and needed these levels of testosterone injections. She also discusses how the danger to both fighters of Sonnen fighting with such an elevated testosterone level was buried in consideration of paperwork issues. And she comments on the practice by some promoters of having their own physicians evaluating fighters in their dressing rooms after their fights, instead of having them sent to hospitals.

We also discuss the issue of head trauma and the brain disease CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, in sports. While the National Football League has taken some steps to address these issues, thus far nothing has been done regarding them in combat sports like mixed martial arts and boxing. Dr. Goodman also comments on the responsibility of the media in dealing with these issues, as well as why athletes drinking alcohol is very dangerous, and much more.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti and Matt Phillips on the Origin of Mixed Martial Arts, Part Two
Denver, CO

(This show contains some explicit language.) On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman continues our discussion with the legendary matchmaker, martial artist, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti, and Matt Phillips of the Martial Arts Resource Group, about the origin and nature of mixed martial arts.

In one of the wildest discussions on this show, we refute various attempts at distorting the history of mixed martial arts, and thus distorting the nature of this sport. More information is provided on the famous mixed match between Muhammad Ali and Antonio Inoki in 1976 by Matt Phillips, who spoke with the legendary Gene LeBell, who was the referee of that fight. We also discuss the usage of the term "mixed martial arts" in a review of the first UFC by Los Angeles Times television critic Howard Rosenberg on November 15, 1993, and other earlier references to that term. We stress the responsibility of the media today to strive to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth about mixed martial arts, why so many are failing to do so, and much more.

Alistair Overeem, also the reigning Strikeforce heavyweight champion, emerged with the K-1 World Grand Prix championship on December 11 in Tokyo, Japan. This is the first time that an athlete has simultaneously held a major mixed martial arts world title along with winning the K-1 World Grand Prix tournament. He thus has to be considered as the top combat sports fighter of 2010.

Also on December 11, the Joseph Agbeko-Yonnhy Perez rematch, won by Agbeko with a unanimous decision, and the Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana fight, won by Khan by unanimous decision, were both action-packed, seesaw fights. Each deserves to be fight of the year candidates in boxing.

The M-1 Challenge XXII mixed martial arts card, held on December 10 in Moscow, Russia, and shown live on national television in Russia and on a webcast to the world, crowned three M-1 champions and helped establish M-1 Global as a major worldwide mixed martial arts organization.

We discuss this and much more on this edition of No Holds Barred.
